Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction Surgery (Mammoplasty)

Breast reduction surgery is a cosmetic surgery procedure for those wanting smaller breasts. Many women are unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts, and can experience physical and emotional discomfort due to their large breasts. Breast reduction surgery or mammoplasty can correct the size and shape of a breast, and reduce large breasts.

Female Breast Reduction

Some women find the size and weight of their breasts uncomfortable, and have breast reduction surgery to get smaller breasts.

Some women experience back ache, shoulder ache and neck pain due to the size and weight of their breasts.

If your large breasts are causing you distress, you may be entitled to surgery under the NHS. You should talk to your GP if you want advice about breast reduction surgery from the NHS.

Male Breast Reduction

Some men have large breasts and require breast reduction surgery to flatten the breast area. Male large breasts can be caused by a hormonal imbalance, excessive alcohol or use of steroids.

Breast Reduction Surgery Recovery

You may be in hospital for 2-3 days and will need 2 weeks off work to rest after your breast reduction surgery. You will need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 6 weeks.

Read the Department of Health information on the breast reduction (mammoplasty) procedure, what results to expect after breast reduction surgery and the risks associated with breast reduction surgery, such as asymmetrical nipples or loss of feeling in the nipples or breasts.   Visit the NHS Direct website for information on male and female breast reduction. How To Prepare For Breast Reduction
By Dr. Jim Greene
Preparing for a breast reduction procedure is considered to be an important part of undergoing a breast reduction. The success of the procedure can sometimes depend on the steps that you take prior to even undergoing the procedure. Furthermore it is important to note that being prepared will also increase your chances of having a safe and incident free recovery from your breast reduction.

The first thing that you have to do in preparation for you breast reduction procedure is to set up a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. In this consultation you will have the opportunity to let the surgeon know what your expectations from the procedure and in return your surgeon will be able to give you an accurate estimate and quality service.

You will need to discuss with the surgeon the reasons why you want the breast reduction as well as any medical conditions which may pertain to either the size of your breast or the ability to undergo a surgical procedure.

The surgeon may also want to know if you are allergic to a drugs, have ha any surgeries in the past or if you have had any family history of breast cancer.

You will be asked to undergo some lab tests which may include things like blood testing, medication adjustments and even a baseline mammogram so the surgeon will have a clear picture of the anatomical makeup of the breasts and the fat that may need removing. You will also be asked to quit smoking long before you will undergo the surgery as smoking increases the recovery time as well as your chances of suffering a complication as a result of the breast reduction procedure.

Furthermore your surgeon will have his or her own list of preventative things that you are suggested top comply with in preparation of the surgery. This list can include things like limiting your intake of blood thinning substances like aspirins and alcohol as well as what you will need to do or not do the day prior to the actual breast reduction procedure.
